Kirkkautta kohti – Towards Glory
The arrival of autumn brings with it a splendor of colors. The green leaves of the trees turn yellow, orange, and red, displaying many shades. In nature, we adapt in preparation for winter. Autumn weather also brings dark evenings and shorter days.
Sunlight is essential for plants, animals, and humans. At the beginning of the creation story, we learn how God first created light:
“God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.” (Genesis 1:16-18)
It is interesting how the last book of the Bible also talks about light. John, in the Book of Revelation, describes the eternal light of the new heaven:
“The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.” (Revelation 21:23-24)
In nature, light and dark, day and night, have their own important function in the change of days. Spiritually, we also need light, that is, Christ. Jesus says:
“I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” (John 12:46)
Even though the autumn evenings are getting darker, God has promised to illuminate our path in life. He is with us in everything, both in good times and in difficult times:
“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6)
